8. Nine letters. Like diabetes and the flu. Oh, but not this time.

February 2—4:43 p.m.

South Anchorage

WITH A FLICK OF HER thumb, she opened her laptop and stared at the screen. She hated writing papers. Especially after a long day. Rubbing her eyes, she determined to put at least an hour into the project before class tonight. The sooner she started, the sooner she’d finish. And the sooner she finished, the sooner she could graduate and get out of her thankless minimum-wage job.

If she’d listened to her mom, she wouldn’t be here. But there was no sense dwelling on the past. Or telling her mother she was right.

The moment helped her to laugh it off and she began to type about early childhood education and the effects of screen time on children under ten. She’d been researching the topic for weeks now; she practically had what she wanted to write memorized.

Her computer buzzed underneath her fingertips, and then the lights started.

Horrible. Flashing. Pulsing. Strobing. Bright … too bright.

No. No … No! She closed her eyes against it.

But the damage was done. The seizure took control until her body betrayed her and flung her violently out of the chair.
